How The Daily Sudoku Works
Fill empty cells with numbers from 1 to 9. Each row, column, and 3x3 box must contain each number exactly once. The starting numbers stay fixed.
A Simple Starting Strategy
- Look for a row, column, or box with only a few empty cells.
- Pick one empty cell and rule out numbers already in its row, column, and box.
- Enter a number when only one possibility remains. If several fit, check another cell rather than guessing.
For your next puzzle, focus on finding one certain move before looking further across the board.

When You Get Stuck
If no cell has just one possible number, reverse the question: where can one missing number go? Choose a row, column, or box, then check every empty cell against its crossing row, column, and box. If that number can go in only one of those cells, you have a certain placement.
Do not treat the first possible cell as the only possible cell. Finish checking the whole row, column, or box before entering the number. These checks will not resolve every position; moving to another part of the board is a reasonable next step.
Try Two Move Checks
1. Find the missing number.
An example row contains 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9, with one empty cell. That cell’s column and 3x3 box contain no 5. Which number completes the row?

5. It is the only missing number in the row, and the column and box checks do not rule it out.
Now consider a different row missing both 5 and 8. If both numbers fit a chosen cell’s column and box, the row alone cannot decide which belongs there. Check another cell or unit for more information instead of treating a possible number as a certain one. These are practice examples, not answers to today’s DaySudoku puzzle.
2. Find the only place for a number.
A different example row is missing 2, 5 and 8. Its three empty cells are A, B and C. After checking each cell’s column and box, these are all the remaining possibilities:
- A: 2 or 5
- B: 5 or 8
- C: 5 or 8
Every cell has two possibilities. Is there still a placement you can be certain about?
Check answer 2
A must be 2. The row needs a 2, and neither B nor C can contain it. Only A can take that number, even though A initially had two possibilities.
The row alone still cannot decide which of B and C is 5 or 8. Check their columns and boxes again after making the certain placement. This is an invented candidate example, not an answer to today’s puzzle.
