How The Block Puzzle Works
The core loop is about placing block pieces carefully, making room for the next shapes, and clearing full lines. Each line clear opens space on the board, and stronger placement choices help you keep a run alive while you chase a better score.
A Simple Starting Strategy
- Before placing a block, look for a row or column you can complete.
- Compare placements that leave a connected open area with ones that create small isolated gaps.
- After a line clears, look at the new space before choosing your next placement.
For your next run, focus on keeping room for later pieces rather than filling the first available gap. A clear opens space, but the shape of the space left behind matters too.

When You Get Stuck
Several empty squares do not necessarily make room for a block: the open squares need to match its shape in one placement. When the board feels crowded, compare the outline of a piece with the connected gaps, rather than counting all the empty squares.
Before committing to a placement that clears a row or column, consider the space that clear would leave. On your next run, try to spot the move that splits a useful open area into smaller gaps. This is a placement habit to practise, not a promise of a higher score.
Try Two Move Checks
1. Check the fit.
Imagine a horizontal piece that covers two neighboring squares. Gap A has two empty squares separated by an occupied square. Gap B has two empty squares next to each other. Which gap can hold that piece in its current orientation?
Check answer 1
Gap B. The piece needs two connected squares in a horizontal line. Gap A has the same number of empty squares, but they are not arranged to fit it.
This is a hypothetical placement check, not a current game board. Before your next placement, compare the shape of the usable space with the piece, rather than just counting empty squares. Fitting a piece does not by itself make that placement the strongest choice.
2. Keep a space available.
Imagine you have a single-square piece and a two-by-two square piece. There is only one empty two-by-two area, plus a separate single-square gap. Placing the single-square piece would not clear a line in this example. Where can it go without blocking the larger piece?
Check answer 2
In the separate single-square gap. This leaves the only two-by-two area intact. Filling any square inside that area would stop the larger piece from fitting there.
This is a hypothetical space-planning exercise, not a prediction of your next pieces. If a placement clears a line, check the board again: the available space has changed. The useful habit is to compare room for both pieces before committing to the first one.
